With great sorrow, NIAAA mourns the passing of Dr. Richard Saitz, an internationally respected leader in alcohol and drug addiction research. He was a long-term recipient of grants funded by the National Institutes of Health with research focusing on screening and brief interventions, integrating substance-related and general health care, and improving the quality of care, particularly in general health settings. He validated single-item screening questions recommended by the NIAAA and the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
