This program will describe health disparities in the current United States prison and jail systems, including a higher prevalence of substance use disorders and HIV when compared to the general population, and the impact of the current opioid epidemic fueling new HIV epidemics across the country. In addition, it will review the current FDA approved medications that effectively reduce opioid and alcohol use and that, when combined with HIV treatment, can improve HIV outcomes for persons released from prison and jail, thereby advancing the goals of the National Ending the HIV Epidemic Plan. The presentation will also highlight specific sex/ gender disparities related to initiation and retention on medication treatment for substance use disorders. Finally, we will provide an overview of current research projects that are evaluating how to improve linkage to substance use, PrEP, and HIV treatment services in the community upon reentry for persons being released from prison and jail.
