Alcohol has long been a part of American culture, and most adults who drink do so responsibly. At the same time, alcohol-related problems among adults and adolescents—which result from drinking too much, too fast, or too often—are among the most significant public health issues in the United States and internationally.

Interventions focused on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are designed to reduce alcohol-exposed pregnancies and FASD among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities. The emphasis among many AI/AN communities on the health of future generations has prioritized this research.
